Hello and thank you for checking out EdGeeks! My name is Marisa Kaplan and I am a former New York City teacher. I am dually certified in general education and special education. I recently left the system to pursue other avenues of creativity with the major goal of making an impact in education. My main area of expertise is in modifying curriculum and learning strategies to meet the needs of all students. One of the main perks of being a special education teacher is the opportunity to collaborate with so many colleagues. Throughout my years in the classroom I have always been part of a strong team of child-advocates including teachers, families, therapists and counselors. I feel in many ways like I have become a Rolodex of strategies and tools just by virtue of working in contact with so many amazing individuals. I am a native New Yorker and I attended public elementary, middle and high school in Manhattan. I have taught all over the city in a variety of different learning environments working with students ranging from infancy to adolescence. The main reason I am starting EdGeeks is to keep myself inspired by finding an outlet for my discoveries about what makes a great education. The four pillars of my blog are:
- Home-School Connection: A place to share learning strategies that can assist in bridging the gap between home and school by demystifying the magic that happens inside the classroom.
- Gadgets for EdGeeks: A place to share and review technology and how it applies to education in the classroom and at home.
- The Parent-Teacher Conference: A Question/Answer section where families and teachers can submit questions and receive a prompt response with possible thoughts/solutions.
- Marisa’s Dream Library: Anyone who knows me also knows that my greatest passion is children’s books. This space will allow me to build the library of my dreams and perhaps of yours too!
